For summertime camping we all rely on our RV AC unit to keep us cool on those scorching hot days but what happens when the unit stops cooling properly. We find that our company sees these types of complaints the most starting in May all the way through November. We try to preach to our customers why regular maintenance on your RV AC is required in order to keep it running properly. Similar to the maintenance you do on your home unit you also should be doing this on your RV AC as well. If you need a checklist to keep handy you can get that HERE.

Similar to your home AC system you most likely have a filter in your RV AC unit that needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. If something is clogging this inside your unit then the amount of airflow you are receiving could be restricted. Check these at least twice per year and replace when needed. Similarly your rooftop unit needs to also be clean and free from any debris. Most people have a hard time understanding how anything could get into that unit on the roof but there are air vents in it and we have found entire birds nests in some. It is a good idea to take the shroud (cover) off your roof top unit at least twice per year and make sure there is no debris or anything else clogging the coils or lines. Check for birds nests as well.

Now onto the more serious issues of why your RV AC is not cooling properly. You could have a communication issue from the thermostat to the unit itself that is causing it to read different temperatures, you could have sensors that are bad or you could be leaking freon altogether. The biggest misconception with these units is that you can replace freon in them. That is a lie! These are sealed systems so you cannot add additional freon to them. You must replace your unit if it is leaking freon. Check out our blog on appliance replacement for estimated costs.

As always if you have questions regarding your RV AC you can always reach out to us and we can try to help. The biggest thing we need to know is whether the AC unit is coming on at all or if it comes on and is just not cooling. These are completely separate issues that will have different diagnosis procedures.
