Used RV’s | Top 5 Things To Look At

We have had several customers lately call us out to look at used RV’s they have bought to give everything a once over. Most of them have been in fairly decent shape but there have been a few that we can identify all the problems the customer will have with the RV. Right now with interest rates as high as they are people are turning to used RV’s as an alternative to paying higher prices for a new one. This can be more problematic in the long run though if you do not look out for some key things.

First we would always look at the tires, brakes, bearings and axles. This is the foundation of the RV you are buying and if these things have not been maintained you could be looking at a pricey bill in the neighborhood of a few thousand dollars if you will have to replace them.

Next we would look for any water leaks. Sometimes these can be very noticeable by water stains on the ceiling or a soft floor but other times they can be less obvious if they are from a water line behind a cabinet or under a sink. Be sure you do look in the obvious places like the walls, ceiling and floor but also look under the sinks for any sort of cracked pipes that would need to be replaced.

Next we would look at the electrical. Check all the fuses and the breakers in the main box. As much as you can look at the wiring to see if anything has been chewed up but critters. Also test all the outlets and make sure they work. If there is an inverter test that as well as a generator.

Next we would test all the appliances. Ask the seller to have the refrigerator on for you and also make sure the AC units kick on and the furnace and water heater are working properly. Test the water pump and check for any leaks that would be coming from underneath the coach.

Last check the roof and the rooftop AC units. You want to be checking for rips, tears, soft spots and cracked seals. All of this can lead to major damage and major expenses down the road.

It’s a good idea anytime you are buying a used unit to check it starting from the bottom and working all the way to the top for anything that is going to cause you headaches and more money out of your pocket down the road.
